3D<-2->2D!

This is the result of my first time using Blender during Gunner School. The brief was to utilize 3D to convince the viewer they are seeing a 2D animation and surprise them with a 3D reveal. It was really fun to start learning Blender and I’m definitely going to explore it more!

  • How did you get the 2D look?

    I set the camera’s focal length to 500mm, set the material to be a solid color, and removed all lighting. I used EEVEE to render the flat version.

  • How did you do the switch into 3D?

    I rendered a flat version and a version with lights then composited it in After Effects!

  • Did you apply anything to it in post?

    I added some grain, and on the 2D sections a turbulent displace to try to hide anymore of the small signs of it being 3D.
